Ancient Healing Modality
Acupuncture is an ancient healing modality that has developed over thousands of years.
It originated in China and is now practiced around the world. It is natural, drug-free and taps
into the body’s innate ability to balance itself. Acupuncture has been honed and refined over
many centuries through practice and research.
Acupuncture Moves Qi
Acupuncture involves the placement of fine needles at specific points in the body. The
needles serve to augment the flow of qi along the meridians. The meridians, or channels, are
pathways along which the qi flows. Qi is the vital force that sustains the body and gives it life.
Creating Balance
When qi flows smoothly, like a gentle breeze through the treetops, vital force and blood
flow reach all the tissues of the body. This nourishes the cells and optimizes health and well-
being. When the qi is blocked, like a dam in a river, the tissues downstream are deprived of the
vital force and blood flow required. As a result, dis-ease or dysfunction develops.
Acupuncture strives to create a balanced flow of qi. By inserting a needle at a precise
location along a meridian we augment the flow of qi and create balance. If the qi is stagnant or
blocked, the intention is to move and soothe the flow of qi along the channel. If the qi is
deficient or weak, the intention is to augment and call qi to that point and channel.
Sources of Imbalance
Each blockage along a meridian is like a small traffic jam. Through our daily living w
accumulate many small traffic jams which block the natural flow of qi. A traffic jam can be
created by a muscle sprain or strain and accompanying inflammation. Over-exertion leading to
muscle fatigue and exhaustion. Inactivity leading to stiffness and inflexibility. Feeling
overwhelmed, stressed or angry for a long period of time. Even diet can create imbalance in the
meridians, such as eating unhealthy foods or foods that disagree with our digestive system.
